Dear old friends,

I have been deeply affected by the services for our beloved "Slats" Monday in Albuquerque. About 350-400 people attended the services at 3:30, followed by a reception at the U. of New Mexico, in Hibben Hall, resplendent with the symbols of archaeology and anthropology so appropriate to Bob's life out there. The core spiritual connection that Bob and Marianne shared with the people and the land in New Mexico was self-evident. Marianne is grounded spiritually and a strong woman, who plans to get her contractor's license and continue with their business. I know you will remember her in your prayers, as well as Brendon, who is not faring as well.

The tributes from those in Albuquerque went on for hours, gong back to the early 70's and speaking of a man with an engaging, contagious smile and enthusiasm. They spoke of a forward thinking man, who loved the rich Indian history of his adopted New Mexico. They also told of his honesty, positive energy, and loyalty. Of great note, their friend "JD" played his flute, beginning with Native American wind instruments and percussion, and then the segue to the flute, where he used many advanced techniques to present the Native American haunting melodies through a traditional flute. What a highlight for me! JD played at Bob and Marianne's wedding as well. Bob's younger brother, Ed (class of '71) spoke of the early years in Rockville, MD, where they lived in a log cabin in a wooded acreage. Bob and Ed built "little cities" in the back of the house and stayed connected to nature, a foreshadowing of the future for Bob.

I was pleased when Bob's brother and parents recognized my name (if not the aged face) I hope it replenished their spirits to have a representative of Bob's youth in Davenport attend the proceedings. In the center of the picture collage was Bob's photo nametag from the reunion last August (thank-you,Linda!). Marianne told me that on Bob's desk she found an e-mail from Steve Lee, who they felt they had made a connection with at the reunion.

(thank you,Steve!). As the testimonies were ending, I realized I was the only person other than Ed who could speak of the 60's, so I got up and said a few words about "Slats", about the "seeds of the man" having been apparent in the boy and also told about how he and Puck used to "cut up" a bit in band. I told them of our huge internet connection and website (thank-you Elizabeth and Mick) and how this meant that many thoughts and prayers were extended. Many of his friends asked is Bob's info. was on our website, and I assured them it was. Marianne and Brendon will have a great support structure out there with all these lovely, spiritual, caring individuals.........but there's never enough! Remember them in the weeks to come as this reality sinks further into their daily lives......Marianne may be e-mailed at: mdickenson@comcast.net.

Love to all,
